Green River, Utah is a very small town occupying only 12 square miles of Emery County. The town takes its name from the river which is a tributary of the Colorado River.
One of the main attractions in Green River is the John Wesley Powell Museum dedicated to the memory of an explorer without whose efforts Green River might not exist.
Each year River City holds a watermelon festival with activities including a parade and walk/race competitions. The festival home is a 25 foot long building constructed of wood in the shape of a watermelon. It is interesting to note this building is part of the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum listings.
Another very interesting place to visit is Goblin Valley State Park. The park is filled with sandstone formations which resemble eerie creatures such as alligators. Goblin Valley was the filming location for the movie Galaxy Quest. To some visitors, Goblin Valley feels like being suddenly transported to the planet Mars.
In the nearby town of Price, the College of Eastern Utah is home to a museum devoted to dinosaurs. The museum is known to have around 10 complete dinosaur skeletons and a massive collection of dinosaur tracks.
